Seldom Seen

Seldom Seen's daily life

Not a lot of stuff happening here to blog about this week.

Today is my brother's birthday - 32 years old - seems like just last week we (he and I) were the only two kids left at home, not old enough to attend school... how time does fly.

I noticed a new rose bud on the rose bush that I planted last spring. It is such an odd color for a rose, but I love it. It startes out a deep orange color but as it opens it changes to yellow with bright pink lining each petal. Just georgous, I'm glad I chose that one when buying my birthday gift this year :-) I just can't believe that it is blooming again NOW at the end of September. I bought it at the end of April on my birhtday and it was in full bloom then, now it is starting again... it is confused.

On the way out to the mailbox I saw that the cows have what used to be the side yard (now it is part of the pasture) nearly all picked down and will have to be moved out of there soon. Oh, and look, I now have a pile of nice fresh sawdust over by the pole barn... the neighbor guy must have delivered it this morning. I have been asking him to get me a load of sawdust when he gets a chance, because it works well for bedding the animals and as mulch in the flower beds.... now I get to play in the gardens again, getting them ready for winter. Woo Hoo!!

Nothing too exciting waiting for me in the mailbox the local classifieds, coupons from a clothing store (that I rarely shop at), and a card from the vet's office... oh wonderful, Nickie is overdue on one of her vaccines.... how did I forget that? Well I'll have to remember to make an appointment. Nickie isn't going to be too thrilled when I tell her about this. She loves going for rides in the truck, but doesn' t like getting out once we stop. She is happy just to stay in the truck and watch to see what is going on around her.... needless to say she doesn't like going into the office. But she is very well behaved when I do take her in, unlike some dogs I know..... My mother's dog sits and growls the WHOLE time they are in the vet's office .... it is so embarassing.

I have a lot apples that have fallen from the tree in the back lawn.  I should go pick some up and make something. Maybe I'll bake something and take it to work, that way it isn't sitting around here waiting for me to eat it ;-)

That reminds me "R" is coming tomorrow to look at the barn roof to see what he can do to stop it from leaking. That means I should bake something for him too, since he won't let me pay him.... It is so nice to have friends who are willing to help, as I can't afford to hire someone to do it.

As you can see there isn't anything going on here today. I guess the most exciting thing that happened was the Culligan Man came to fix my water system. It was clogged and so that the water wasn't going trough the system the way it should.... no wonder I've been getting yellowish orange stains in the sinks again..... but it is all fixed now :D

I have to go check to see what kind of mischief the dogs are into... just like kids ... when things get quiet you know its time to check on them ;-) and three of the dogs are outside alone, so I better go see if they are still there..... maybe Dawson went to visit the neighbor. He did that yesterday, and when I went out to call him back she (the neighbor) hollered over "He's over here... he can stay for a while, if it's okay. I'll be out here to watch him for a while" and after a while she brought him home. Like I said my dogs are like kids... they even go see what kind of cookies the neighbor has to offer. She  saves him the pink dog biscuits "because they are his favorite", yeah okay! Why is it, at home he doesn't care what color the darn thing is as long as he gets one before the other three dogs ????? I think she spoils him... but she IS his Grandmother, so I guess she's allowed.

Sunday

Ever have one of those days (or several of those days) where you have a thousand things on you "to-do" list but just can't bring yourself to do more than 2 at a time? Well, that is the way I am today (and yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that.....) I just don't seem to have any ambition today. Then I think 'today is Sunday, right, the day of rest? Yeah, sure that is what the reason for feeling this way.

I can't say I didn't get anything done today though, I did work on sorting trhough a stack of magazines that my SIL saved for me. I have sorted some into smaller piles, ones to keep because I want to use some of the decorating ideas, ones to keep and copy recipes, and a pile to either give away or drop off at the laundry mat, thier selection is not very good.

I don't even have a story to share about my silly dogs yet today, they have been fairly well behaved and haven't gotten into much mischief lately. At the moment Dayna and Libby (the Great Danes) are sound asleep, snoring, on thier bed (a futon matress, Nickie (the mystery mutt) is a asleep in "her" chair, but has her ears at attention just in case something happens while her eyes are closed... she doesn't miss a trick, and Dawson (the Australian Shepherd) is guarding the backyard.... well he thinks he is. He is sitting on the back steps half asleep waiting for a cat to cross the lawn, a cow to try to get out of the fence, or one of the sheep to dare try climbing her enclosure, then he will do "his part" and go tearing after "the animal in the wrong" and when said animal is no longer in the wrong Dawson will feel so greatfull that he has to come back to the house and tell me all about what just happened. He is so funny, and so vocal, and has SO much personality. Every day when I get home from work he starts barking, it sounds like he is telling me about everything that happened in the eight and a half hours that I was gone. Anyone that has ever met Dawson falls in love with him, and raves "look at those eyes... they are so beautiful, and his coloring too". I try to tell everyone that Dawson thinks of himself as handsome not beautiful, afterall he is the man of the house, and you know how men are about being called anything less then macho ;-)

Well, I'm off to sort through more magazines, if I find anything interesting I'll come back and tell you about it. I also should think about what I'm going to fix for dinner tonight too. One of the hardest things about living alone, in my opinion, is cooking for just you. I love to cook for a group of people, but hate cooking for just me.

Pumpkin Cookies

Pumpkin Cookies

1 cup Brown Sugar

1 cup Butter

1 egg

1 cup Pumpkin

2 cups all-purpose Flour

1 teaspoon Baking Soda

½ teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Baking Powder

1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Mix together the sugar, butter, and egg, then add the pumpkin and mix it well. Sift together the dry ingredients and add them to the mixture, beating it well. Drop the batter by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 15 minutes. When cookies have cooled slightly, frost them with the following icing. This makes a very delicious and moist cookie.

1 tablespoon Butter

1 tablespoon Milk

¼ cup Pumpkin

Icing Sugar

Cream the butter, add the milk, and pumpkin, and then add enough sugar to bring the icing to spreading consistency.

This has got to be one of my favorite cookie recipes EVER. Every time I make these for friends I get requests for the recipe. These cookies are SO moist and have just enough pumpkin flavor.... oh yummy, I think I'll make some now, just because they are so good. :-)

My Intro - the second time

Okay, so here I am typing out my intro to everyone and try to add an emoticon and ..... bleep.... the whole doggone introduction just up and disappears [shocked but don't dare try to add emoticon again]... now tell me, where did it go??? I mean I realize that I'm new to this whole Blog thing and all but come on.... I'm not TOTALLY computer illiterate (or am I?).

   So, I will start again.

You probably read the title of my blog and wondered "just what is that supposed to mean?"... just what it says...

Seldom Seen Acres is the name of my farm. I own a little farm in rural Pennsylvania, on a dead end road, and we (Me and my menagerie of animals) are rarely seen by anyone except family and friends. So there you have it Seldom Seen....

I am a baker by trade so I will be posting a lot of recipes here. I will also be posting some of the antics that happen around here, and believe me when one lives with four dogs, a horse, several cows, a llama, two piglets, three goats, two sheep, and several cats... I don't have to think long on a silly story to share. I will try to keep you updated on the daily happenings but sometimes things get hectic and I don't have much extra time... but I will try.

Today is my Father's 62nd Birthday so I am going to his house for cake and ice cream.

Hope you all have a good evening.
